Zebra Pleco

The Zebra Pleco is named for the bold black and white striping that covers its entire body, including the fins. These fish are endemic to Brazil where they can be found in the Xingu River which is a tributary to the Amazon. In their native environment, these fish can typically be found in quickly flowing, highly oxygenated waters with sandy substrate. Zebra Plecos tend to prefer deep water, often hiding in crevices and rock caves. Though once common in the aquarium trade, the Brazilian government banned further export of this species in 2004. Thus, most existing specimens are tank bred.

Tank Set-Up

The ideal tank for Zebra Plecos will simulate their natural environment. The tank should have sandy substrate littered with small stones and pebbles – additional ornaments such as driftwood roots or branches can also be used. In order to replicate the level of water flow these fish prefer, position one or more powerheads at one end of the tank. Zebra Plecos thrive in warmer water temperatures and higher oxygen levels. Despite being a peaceful species, these requirements do not make them a recommended species for the general community tank.

Feeding

Juveniles of this species should be offered a meat-based diet consisting of live and frozen bloodworms, prawns and chopped mussels. As these fish mature, algae and vegetable matter will become an important part of the diet. You may also supplement the diet of these fish with sinking pellets or wafers.

Breeding

Zebra Plecos are a popular species among aquarium fish breeders and they will sometimes spawn on their own. In order to encourage spawning, set up a separate breeding tank outfitted with plenty of caves to provide cover and to act as spawning sites. Condition breeding pair with plenty of live and frozen foods and remove the female from the tank after spawning has occurred. The male of this species will tend to the eggs until they hatch as many as seven days later.
