Tiger Barb

One of the most easily recognized species of Barb, the Tiger Barb is native to the island of Borneo. These fish can be found in quiet forest streams and tributaries where the water is clear and the substrate is composed of sand and gravel. Tiger Barbs can grow up to three inches in length and may exhibit silver or brownish yellow body coloration. These fish have red fins as well as four vertical black stripes for which they are named.

Tank Set-Up

The Tiger Barb is one of the most popular species of freshwater fish in the aquarium hobby. This species is very active, best kept in groups of five or more of its own species. In smaller groups, Tiger Barbs may become aggressive and are likely to nip the fins of other fish. These fish prefer well-planted tanks with soft, slightly acidic water. Like most Barbs, Tiger Barbs require a great deal of open tank space for swimming and they dwell primarily at mid-level.

Feeding

The natural diet of these fish includes algae, small invertebrates, diatoms and other detritus. In the home tank, however, Tiger Barbs are not fussy eaters. The ideal staple diet for these fish will include high-quality flakes or pellets that contains some vegetable matter. This diet can be supplemented with live and frozen foods like Artemia and Daphnia as well as fresh vegetables and Spirulina flakes. Feed a diet consisting of a variety of foods on a regular basis to promote the best health and coloration.

Breeding

Tiger Barbs are easily bred and may spawn in either large groups or pairs. Because Tiger Barbs are egg layers, the breeding tank should be decorated with fine-leaved plants in which eggs may be deposited. The breeding tank should be kept at a neutral pH and a temperature between 75 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Parent fish should be removed from the tank after spawning because they are likely to eat their eggs and fry.
