Spot-Tailed Rasbora

Spot-Tailed Rasbora

This species can be found in both swiftly-flowing streams and sluggish blackwaters in the Malaysian Peninsula as well as the Greater Sunda Islands of Borneo and Sumatra. Spot-Tailed Rasboras, also known as Great Scissortail Rasboras, are named for the shape and scissorlike movement of their caudal fins. These fish have a largely colorless body ornamented with a thin, yellow lateral stripe. The caudal fins are typically red with black tips.

Spot-Tailed Rasboras are somewhat large, expected to reach at least six inches in length at maturity. Despite their size, these fish are typically peaceful and do well in large community tanks. Because they are shoaling fish, Spot-Tailed Rasboras are best kept in groups of six or more. These fish prefer planted tanks with plenty of open swimming space. This species of Rasbora is one of the easiest to breed, likely to spawn in mature, densely-planted aquariums. These fish show no parental care and may eat their own eggs and fry.
