Splash Tetra

These fish are relatively devoid of color but unique among aquarium fish due to their reproductive methods. Splash Tetras are also sometimes called Spraying, Splashing or Jumping Tetras and other related species are sometimes sold under the same name. This species of Tetra typically exhibits an elongated silver body and the scales are somewhat larger and more differentiated than those of many other Tetra species. Splash Tetras are native to South America where they can be found throughout the northern portion of the continent in Guyana, Suriname, Brazil and Venezuela. These fish tend to inhabit slow-moving waters like streams and tributaries, though they can also be found in flooded forests during the rainy season.

Tank Set-Up

Splash Tetras are best kept in tall tanks with a reduced water level where plants are allowed to grow over the water. The addition of floating plant cover is also beneficial. Because these fish are such excellent jumpers, the tank should be covered with a tight-fitting lid. Though these fish are very peaceful in nature, their small size makes them less than ideal for the general community setup. Splash Tetras are best kept in a species tank or with other peaceful Tetras and peaceful bottom feeders.

Feeding

These Tetras are omnivorous by nature, feeding on a variety of foods both in the wild and in the home aquarium. To promote optimum health and coloration, offer these fish a varied diet on a regular basis. Splash Tetras should be given a staple diet of high-quality flakes or granules supplemented with live and frozen foods such as bloodworms, Daphnia and brine shrimp.

Breeding

This species is named for their unique spawning behavior which involves a great deal more activity than typical Tetra spawnings. Prior to spawning, the male will repeatedly jump out of the water in search of a spawning site such as the underside of a plant. Once the site has been selected, the male will lead the female to the site and, at the height of climax, the pair will leap out of the water and land on the spawning site where the eggs and sperm will be released simultaneously. This fish definitely gets our vote as the “most coordinated” of all the aquarium fish! Splash Tetras may produce up to 200 eggs in any one spawning and the eggs typically hatch between 36 and 72 hours after spawning.
