Snowflake Woodcat

Native to the Amazon River basin, the Snowflake Woodcat can also be found in the coastal rivers of the Guianas. These fish have a widely distributed habitat that includes a large portion of South America east of the Andes Mountains and parts of Brazil to the south. Snowflake Woodcats have dark, compacted bodies with a broad caudal peduncle. This species has two pairs of barbels and light colored patches all over the body that are said to resemble snowflakes. Like all catfish, Snowflake Woodcats have no scales – they have skin instead.

Tank Set-Up

Similar to many catfish, the Snowflake Woodcat is a fairly reclusive species likely to hide out for days at a time, only appearing at night. Because they are nocturnal, these fish prefer tanks that provide plenty of hiding places in the form of rocks, caves and dense planting. These fish do well in the community tank because they tend not to bother other fish. They will, however, eat young fry and may also consume eggs.

Feeding

In the wild, Snowflake Woodcats feed primarily on small crustaceans and invertebrates. In the home aquarium, however, they are unfussy and will likely accept any foods they are offered. Give your woodcats a staple diet of sinking pellets or wafers supplemented with live and frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp and prawns. To ensure the best health and coloration of this species feed a varied diet on a regular basis.

Breeding

This species is unique from other catfish in that it breeds through internal fertilization. The eggs are typically deposited on the underside of pieces of driftwood and, after spawning, the adult fish tends not to show any parental care. It is believed that soft water and conditioning with live or frozen foods may help to encourage spawning.
