Snakeskin Gourami

One of the less common Gouramis in the aquarium trade, the Snakeskin Gourami is also known as the Siamese Gourami. These fish are native to Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam where they serve as an important food source. In their natural habitat, these fish can be found in slow-moving or still waters shaded by submerged and marginal vegetation.

Tank Set-Up

In the aquarium trade, these fish are a hardy species recommended for novice aquarists. Snakeskin Gouramis are adaptable to a variety of water conditions and are generally very peaceful. The main problem with keeping these fish in the home aquarium is their eventual size – these fish can grow up to 12 inches in the wild, though they do not typically grow quite so large in captivity. The ideal tank environment for this species is a planted tank that provides plenty of open swimming space as well as floating plants and other hiding places for cover.

Feeding

Snakeskin Gouramis are omnivorous by nature, feeding on a variety of insects and insect larvae in the wild. In the home aquarium, however, these fish will likely accept any food offered. Provide these fish with a staple diet of high-quality flakes or pellets supplemented with live and frozen foods such as brine shrimp, tubifex worms and bloodworms. To help achieve the best health and color of this species feed a varied diet on a regular basis.

Breeding

Like most Gouramis, Snakeskin Gouramis are bubble nesters and very easy to breed. In order to encourage spawning, the breeding tank should contain no more than 8 inches of water and it should be decorated with plenty of floating plants. During spawning, Snakeskin Gouramis may produce as many as 5000 eggs. The male of the species gathers the eggs in the bubble nest and guards them until they hatch, usualy 20 to 30 hours after spawning.
