Slim Betta

More commonly called the Slender Betta, the Slim Betta is silver to light brown in color. Some specimens have a greenish or blueish tint, though most specimens are relatively devoid of coloration. These fish are native to peninsular Malaysia where they have been found in forest swamps heavy with vegetation as well as peat swamps and blackwater streams.

Tank Set-Up

In the home aquarium, these fish prefer a well-planted tank ornamented with driftwood roots and branches. The tank should be dimly lit and ornamented with floating plants to diffuse the lighting. Slim Bettas thrive in slightly acidic water but reports of successful spawning have been made using water with a neutral pH. These fish are not recommended for community tanks but can be kept with medium-sized raboras and Barbs.

Feeding

The Slim Betta feeds almost exclusively on insects in the wild, particularly on insect larvae. Because these fish are good jumpers, they often leap out of the water to catch their prey. In the home aquarium, Slim Bettas should be offered high-quality Betta pellets as a staple diet. Supplement this diet with small live foods such as bloodworms, Daphnia and Artemia.

Breeding

Slim Bettas are a bubble-nesting species and can be spawned in pairs. Once the pair has been conditioned using live and frozen foods, spawning is likely to occur beneath the bubble nest. The male Betta embraces the female and releases his sperm at the same moment she releases her eggs. Between 5 and 20 eggs are typically released at a time and the entire spawning process can take several hours. Following spawning, the male of the species will gather the eggs and place them in the nest to guard until hatching.
