Slender Rasbora

Though less colorful than some of its cousins, the Slender Rasbora exhibits a prominent blue-black line running along the length of its body. This feature has earned the Slender Rasbora a variety of nicknames including Black Line and Gold Line Rasbora. Native to Southeast Asia, the Slender Rasbora can be found in a variety of waterways including streams, ponds, ditches and flooded fields. In the wild, these fish can be found in large schools. In the home aquarium, Slender Rasboras are best kept in groups of five or more.

Tank Set-Up

Slender Rasboras have a slim silver body and white belly. They are relatively easy to raise in the home aquarium but can be sensitive to fluctuations in water quality. Slender Rasboras prefer a tank decorated with live plants, rocks and driftwood with sandy or fine gravel substrate. Because they are a peaceful species, Slender Rasboras do well in the community tank but may suffer in the presence of more aggressive species. When kept with other fish of similar temperament, Slender Rasboras can be very active and, though they may quarrel occasionally, they will rarely show aggression.

Feeding

This species of fish is omnivorous by nature and is likely to accept almost any food you offer. The ideal staple diet for these fish will include a healthy balance of dried flakes or granules supplemented with live and frozen foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp and bloodworms. These fish will also benefit from some vegetable matter in their diet.

Breeding

These Rasboras can be bred fairly easily but require a large tank for spawning. The breeding tank should be decorated with fine-leafed plants such as Java moss, hornwort and cabomba. Because these fish are likely to eat their own young, the parents should be removed from the tank following spawning. After hatching, the fry can be fed liquid food like infusoria until they become large enough to accept finely crushed flake foods.
