Considered one of the best Tetras for the community tank. Good candidates for tankmates would include most Livebearers, Tetras, and Danios. Bottom dwellers such as Corydoras and Bristlenose Catfish also make good choices. Rasboras and Loaches shouldn’t be excluded from the list either.

Silvertip Tetra

Also known as the Copper Tetra, the Silvertip Tetra originates from Brazil where it inhabits creeks and tributaries away from the main river channel. It gets its name from the silvery-white color on the tips of its fins. The Silvertip Tetra is an active schooling fish and will do well in a peaceful community tank. As with most freshwater aquarium fish, the male is more colorful than the female. Since this species is fairly unfussy when it comes to water chemistry and diet, it makes an excellent beginners fish for newcomers to the hobby. However, even though this species is hardy and highly adaptable, it shouldn’t be misconstrued as a “green light” for less than acceptable husbandry practices. Keep no less than six together, with 10 to 13 an even better display of their active schooling behavior. An interesting characteristic of the Silvertip Tetra is the fact that it does not have and adipose fin as most Characins do.

Tank Set-Up

The Silvertip Tetra will do well in a heavily planted tank with a sandy substrate and has been reported to show its best colors under dappled lighting. As with most Tetras, black substrate will also bring out the colors more vividly than a lighter substrate. Adding floating plants to the setup will help to dim the lighting, which may have the added benefit of providing a sense of security.

Feeding

The Silvertip Tetra will accept just about any food offered. However, as with most aquarium species a varied diet is best. For optimum health and color, feed a diet consisting of a quality flake along with live and/or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, blood worms, Daphnia, etc.

Breeding

Although it’s not uncommon for the Silvertip Tetra to spawn in the community tank, a separate breeding tank is recommended. The breeding tank should contain Java moss, a spawning mop, or fine-leaved plants to provide a place for the eggs to be deposited. The water should be slightly acidic and the lighting should be dim. As soon as you see eggs, remove the adults to prevent them from consuming the young.
