Red Rainbowfish

These fish are named for the brilliant red coloration exhibited by males of the species. Male Red Rainbowfish may also sport silver specks while females may exhibit a slightly brownish coloration. Red Rainbowfish are native to Lake Sentani in Papua New Guinea, which explains why they’re also called Lake Sentani Rainbowfish. These fish tend to form shoals in the lake and surrounding waters, preferring areas of dense vegetation. In order for these fish to thrive in the home aquarium, it is wise to simulate these conditions.

Tank Set-Up

In the home aquarium, Red Rainbowfish prefer alkaline water with gentle flow. These fish do well in planted tanks that provide a balanced combination of dense vegetation and plenty of open swimming space as they are an active fish. Red Rainbowfish are peaceful by nature, but tend to intimidate smaller species with their quick movements and large size. Because they are naturally found in shoals, these fish should be kept in groups with no less than 6 – 8 of their own species, preferably more.

Feeding

Feeding Red Rainbowfish is fairly straightforward as they are not fussy eaters. A typical aquarium diet for the Red Rainbowfish should include a quality flake along with live and frozen foods, such as blood worms, brine shrimp, and Daphnia. Foods containing carotenoids are reported to bring out the red color of males to an optimum level. For optimum health and coloration feed a varied diet on a regular basis.

Breeding

Breeding Red Rainbowfish in the home aquarium is considered to be fairly easy. These fish are egg scatterers and thus require a breeding tank decorated with plenty of fine-leaved plants in which the fish can deposit their eggs. Java Moss or a spawning mop may also work just as well. Like most Rainbowfish, this species is best conditioned in groups. The fattest pair of conditioned fish can then be selected and moved to the breeding tank where they may spawn continually over a period of several weeks. The fry are usually swimming in 7 – 8 days.
