Pretty Tetra

The Pretty Tetra is native to Peru where it inhabits the rain forest streams and tributaries of the upper Amazon River. It’s also known as the Garnet Tetra and the Black Wedge Tetra. Whichever name you choose, the peaceful nature of this species makes it an excellent choice for the community tank. The Pretty Tetra is a captive bred species which usually makes for a more hardy and adaptable fish. For this reason, it’s also an excellent choice for the newcomer to fish keeping.

Tank Set-Up

An ideal tank set up would mimic their natural habitat by having a sandy substrate, driftwood, and the addition of almond leaves to achieve the tannin-stained water they naturally inhabit. Oak leaves are also acceptable to achieve this effect. Just remember to change the leaves out every 2 to 3 weeks to prevent them from rotting and affecting the water quality. As with most blackwater biotope tanks, fairly dim lighting is recommended to achieve the full effect and mimic the natural habitat. The Pretty Tetra will also do well in a heavily planted tank with dim lighting. In either set up however, it’s best if the pH is maintained on the acid side of neutral – preferably in the range of 5.5 – 7.0.

Feeding

The Pretty Tetra is not a picky eater and will accept just about anything offered. A varied diet consisting of a quality flake and live/frozen foods, such as blood worms, brine shrimp, etc. will go a long way toward ensuring optimum health and coloration.

Breeding

For breeding, a separate spawning tank is recommended. Include a spawning mop, Java Moss, or any fine leaved plants so as to provide a place where the eggs can be deposited. Additionally, it is recommended that the temperature be raised to 80 – 84°F. As with most Tetras, after spawning remove the adults as they will eat the eggs.
