Moonlight Gourami

Moonlight Gouramis are named for their silver coloration which is similar in appearance to the glow of moonlight. These fish differ slightly in shape from other Gouramis in that their heads are concavely sloped. This species is native to the Mekong River in Vietnam and Cambodia and has been introduced into the Mekong River basin in Thailand. In the wild, these fish can be found in densely planted waters such as lowland bogs, swamps and ponds.

Tank Set-Up

In the home aquarium, these fish prefer a tank that mimics their natural environment – a planted tank with slow water flow and plenty of open swimming space. Although Moonlight Gouramis are undemanding in regards to water parameters, they are most likely to thrive in soft, acidic water. These fish are generally a social species, well suited to the community tank though males of the species may become aggressive towards males of their own or other similar species.

Feeding

These Gouramis are omnivorous, feeding on a variety of insects and insect larvae in the wild. In captivity, however, these fish will likely accept any food offered. Provide Moonlight Gouramis with a staple diet of high-quality flakes or pellets supplemented with live and frozen foods such as brine shrimp, tubifex worms and bloodworms. Feed a varied diet on a regular basis to promote optimum health and coloration.

Breeding

Moonlight Gouramis are bubble nesters and breeding this species can be tricky. In order to encourage spawning, it is wise to lower the water level in the breeding tank to no higher than 8 inches and to slowly raise the temperature to 85 degrees Fahrenheit. These fish are most likely to spawn in tanks decorated with dark substrate and a large quantity of floating plants. After spawning, the eggs usually hatch in 1 to 2 days and will become free swimming after another 2 days.
