Kuhli Loach

Also called the Coolie Loach or Leopard Eel, Kuhli Loaches are native to Indonesia and the Malay Peninsula. These fish tend to inhabit beds of sand in slow rivers and mountain streams. The Kuhli Loach is nocturnal by nature, often hiding during the day and coming out at night to feed. These fish are easily identified by their elongated, eel-like bodies and small fins. Kuhli Loaches typically exhibit ten to fifteen dark, vertical bars with pink or yellowish coloring in between. These fish also have four pairs of barbels near the mouth and the eyes are covered by transparent skin.

Tank Set-Up

Kuhli Loaches are very popular among aquarium hobbyists and they make excellent additions to the community tank. These fish are hardy, tolerant species that are likely to do well in a variety of tank conditions. This species of loach prefers fine substrate and requires plenty of hiding places in the form of rocks, plants and driftwood branches. These loaches are best kept in groups with three or more of their own species and may also get along with other loaches.

Feeding

These loaches are micropredators in the wild, sifting through substrate for small crustaceans and insect larvae. In captivity, however, Kuhli Loaches may accept dried foods. Offer these fish a staple diet of high-quality sinking foods supplemented with plenty of live and frozen foods such as bloodworms, Artemia and Daphnia. A varied diet is important in maintaining the health of this species.

Breeding

Sexing Kuhli Loaches can be difficult, though the differences between the sexes often become more apparent during breeding times. Females become round and their greenish ovaries may be visible through the skin. Spawning Kuhli Loaches in the home aquarium is not considered easy but it has been known to happen. In order to spawn, Kuhli Loaches require plenty of hiding places and stable, high water quality.
