Honey Gourami

Though once classified as belonging to the genus Colisa, the Honey Gourami is now commonly cited as a member of the genus Trichogaster. These fish are native to India and Bangladesh where they can be found in heavily vegetated, slow-moving waters such as ponds, irrigation ditches and flooded fields. Males of the species usually exhibit a bright orange coloration around the throat which may also apply to the fins. Females tend to be less colorful and often grow slightly larger than males of the species.

Tank Set-Up

Honey Gouramis are non-aggressive and are widely considered to be well-suited to the community tank. Though males of the species can be agressive toward one another, they can be kept with other species provided they have enough room to establish their own territory. This species prefers a densely planted tank that provides plenty of cover because they tend to be quite timid. These fish thrive in warm temperatures and prefer tanks with minimal water movement.

Feeding

These Gouramis are omnivorous, feeding on a variety of foods in the wild. In the home aquarium, these fish will likely accept any food offered. Provide Honey Gouramis with a staple diet of high-quality flakes or pellets supplemented with live and frozen foods such as brine shrimp, tubifex worms and bloodworms. Feed a varied diet on a regular basis to promote optimum health and coloration.

Breeding

Honey Gouramis are bubble nesters and one of the easier Gourami species to breed. These fish are most likely to spawn in a shallow breeding tank where the water level does not exceed 6 inches. These fish also prefer a higher temperature around 82 degrees Fahrenheit in the breeding tank along with a neutral pH around 7.0. Once spawning has occured the female should be removed from the tank and the male left to tend the eggs until they hatch 24 to 36 hours later.
