Harlequin Rasbora

Perhaps the best known species of Rasbora, the Harlequin Rasbora is popular among aquarium hobbyists. These fish can be found in a variety of habitats throughout Southeast Asia but are primarily found in Malaysia, Thailand, Sumatra and Singapore. Because they are such a popular species, large numbers of Harlequin Rasbora are wild-caught each year to supplement the limited supply available from commercial breeders.

Tank Set-Up

This species tends to stay small which makes them excellent additions to the community tank. Harlequin Rasboras are a friendly, peaceful species that can be kept with other mild-mannered species but should not be housed together with aggressive species. Harlequin Rasboras are one of the hardiest members of the family Cyprinidae, capable of adapting to a variety of water conditions and can also withstand stronger filtration than many of their cousins. These fish are best kept in groups of eight or more and they prefer densely planted tanks with dim lighting and dark substrate.

Feeding

These fish are micropredators which means they feed on small worms, insects and crustaceans in the wild. In the home aquarium, however, these fish are unfussy and will accept a variety of prepared and live foods. Offer these fish a staple diet of high-quality flakes or granules supplemented with live and frozen foods such as brine shrimp, Daphnia and Artemia. Feed a diet consisting of a variety of foods on a regular basis to promote the best health and coloration.

Breeding

Harlequin Rasboras are difficult to breed because they have specific requirements for breeding tank conditions. They prefer very soft, acidic water with a pH around 6.0 and a temperature of 82 degrees Fahrenheit. Some breeders suggest that sexually mature fish older than 1 year have a greater chance of spawning than younger fish and conditioning the fish on live foods may also help. Following spawning, the eggs will typically hatch after 24 to 48 hours and the fry will become free swimming within a week.
