Golden Wonder Panchax

The Golden Wonder Panchax is actually a gold color morph of the Striped Panchax and is not a naturally-occuring morph. These fish have been selectively bred for the aquarium hobby. The Striped Panchax is not an annual species and can be found throughout southern India and in Sri Lanka. This species inhabits permanent bodies of water such as mountain streams, lakes, swamps and rice paddies. Though females of this species tend to be fairly bland in color, males often exhibit vibrant yellow coloration on the rear half of their bodies and on their fins. Many specimens also exhibit faint vertical banding on the rear half of the body as well as on the fins.

Tank Set-Up

The Golden Wonder Panchax is fairly popular in the aquarium hobby and is also available in a red strain. These fish prefer densely-planted tanks decorated with driftwood and rocks to create hiding places. Add floating plants like Cabomba to help diffuse the light. Bright light is generally not recommended for most Killifisn species. Because these fish are excellent jumpers, a tight-fitting lid is highly recommended. Although they are a predatory species, the Golden Wonder Panchax can be kept with peaceful species of fish as long as they are not small enough to be considered prey. Ideal tank mates for this species include Characins, Cichlids and Corydoras.

Feeding

The Golden Wonder Panchax is not very picky in regard to feeding and will typically accept a variety of live, frozen and dried foods. For optimum health and coloration, feed a varied diet of live/frozen foods such as brine shrimp, Daphnia, and bloodworms along with a good quality flake.

Breeding

Breeding this species is considered to be fairly easy and the Golden Wonder Panchax is an egg scattering species. To encourage breeding, condition groups of male and female fishes on live foods then select the fattest, healthiest pair for breeding. The spawning tank should be maintained at a pH around 6.5 and a temperature of 78 degrees Fahrenheit – the tank itself should be brightly lit and decorated with floating plants. The breeding pair should spawn on a daily basis for about two weeks, depositing between 10 and 30 eggs every 24 hours. For the best results, remove the eggs to a separate tank containing 1 to 2 inches of water treated with Methylene blue to prevent fungus.
