Golden White Cloud

A colorful variant of the White Cloud Mountain Minnow, Golden White Clouds originate from the gorges in the White Cloud Mountains of China. Golden White Clouds have bright golden bodies ornamented with red markings on the tail and either side of the head.

Tank Set-Up

Golden White Clouds are a hardy species, able to adapt to a variety of water conditions. Because they are forgiving of less-than-perfect water quality and lower tank temperatures, they make excellent starter fish for cycling new aquariums and for beginning hobbyists. Golden White Clouds are healthier and more active at moderate tank temperatures but can survive temperatures as low as 41 degrees Fahrenheit. Golden White Clouds are peaceful schooling fish, best kept in groups of five or more. When kept in schools, these fish are very active and can add a splash of vibrant color to the community tank. Because these fish are likely to jump, they are best kept in a tank with a lid.

Feeding

This species is believed to be micropredatory in nature, feeding on zooplankton such as small insects and crustaceans in the wild. In captivity, however, Golden White Clouds are likely to accept dried foods as well as live and frozen foods. Offer these fish a staple diet of healthy flake foods supplemented with small live and frozen foods such as Artemia, Daphnia and bloodworms. To ensure the best health and coloration of this species feed a varied diet on a regular basis.

Breeding

These fish spawn in cool water, depositing their eggs over fine-leaved plants. Golden White Clouds are relatively easy to breed in captivity and generally do not eat their own young. The breeding tank should be kept at a neutral or slightly acidic pH. Once spawning occurs, the eggs should hatch after 48 to 60 hours and the fry will be ready to accept small foods like brine shrimp nauplii after a week or so.
