Glowlight Tetra

The native range of the Glowlight Tetra is the Essequibo River in Guyana where it inhabits the tannin-stained acidic waters that flow through thick jungle cover. This species is one of the best choices for the general community aquarium. Most aquarium livestock available is captive bred on a mass scale. Captive bred species are usually more hardy and adaptable than wild caught which, therefore, makes this an excellent choice for the newcomer to the aquarium hobby. Since the Glowlight Tetra is a shoaling species, purchase no less than a group of six. Ten or more will light up an aquarium with a magnificent show!

Tank Set-Up

A typical tank set-up could mimic their natural habitat by having a sandy substrate, driftwood, and the addition of almond leaves to achieve the tannin-stained water they naturally inhabit. Oak leaves are also acceptable to achieve this effect. Just remember to change the leaves out every 2 to 3 weeks to prevent them from rotting and affecting the water quality. As with most blackwater biotope tanks, fairly dim lighting is recommended to achieve the full effect and mimic the natural habitat. But don’t think you’ll lose sight of these small fish as you may be amazed at how well the Glowlight Tetra can illuminate a blackwater tank!

Feeding

The Glowlight Tetra is not a fussy eater and will except just about anything offered. A varied diet of quality flakes and live/frozen foods such as bloodworms and brine shrimp is best to ensure optimum health and coloration.

Breeding

As far as breeding is concerned, set up the breeding tank with some Java moss, a spawning mop, or fine-leaved plants to provide a place for the eggs to be deposited. The water should be in the acidic range of 5.5-6.5 with a temperature between 80-85°F and the lighting should be dim. As soon as spawning is complete, remove the adults to prevent them from eating the eggs.
