Glowlight Danio

Having only recently been introduced into the freshwater aquarium hobby, the Glowlight Danio is still quite rare. These fish can only be found in the Irrawaddy River, located in the Myanmar region of Asia, and they are not commonly kept in pet stores in the western world. Glowlight Danios are one of the most colorful varieties of Danio, sporting bars, stripes and spots in bold colors like green, red and turquoise. These fish are best kept in large shoals of six or more to bring out the best of their coloration.

Tank Set-Up

Glowlight Danios are a very peaceful species but they can also be very shy. For these reasons, Glowlight Danios are best kept in tanks with their own kind or with other Danios, except the Giant Danio. These fish are somewhat more difficult to keep than the other Danio variants because they prefer soft, slightly acidic water with a high level of flow and oxygenation. Glowlight Danios prefer densely planted tanks with dark substrate, floating plants and plenty of open swimming space near the front of the tank. Because they are likely to jump, Glowlight Danios should be kept only in tanks with tight-fitting lids.

Feeding

In the wild, Glowlight Danios feed primarily on insects and insect larvae. In the home aquarium, however, these fish will accept most foods it is offered. The ideal staple diet for these fish will include high-quality flakes or granules supplemented with live and frozen foods such as brine shrimp, Daphnia, bloodworms and Artemia. To ensure the best health and coloration of this species feed a varied diet on a regular basis.

Breeding

Glowlight Danios prefer densely-planted breeding tanks and can be conditioned for spawning in groups consisting of two breeding pairs. The breeding tank itself should be mature, dimly lit and the base should be covered with mesh so the adults cannot eat their own eggs. The water in the tank should be kept neutral to slightly acidic and the temperature maintained around 75 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit. After spawning, the eggs typically hatch with 72 hours and the fry become free swimming after a few days.
