Daget’s Panchax

Also called the Red-Chinned Panchax and the Fire Mouth Killi, Daget’s Panchax is native to Liberia, Ghana and the Ivory Coast. These fish tend to inhabit small streams and ponds in lowland coastal areas and, because they typically live in bodies of permanent water, they are not considered an annual species. Daget’s Panchax earned their nickname Red-Chinned Panchax from the orange-red stripe edged in black that many specimens exhibit on the chin. Other distinguishing characteristics of this species include 5 to 7 vertical black stripes on the body and yellowish green fins.

Tank Set-Up

This species is best kept in a dimly lit tank with heavily planted areas as well as floating plants to provide cover and to diffuse the lighting. Bright light is generally not recommended for most Killifish species. The tank should be decorated with driftwood and rocks to provide hiding places and the tank itself should have a tight-fitting lid to prevent the fish from jumping out. This species is predatory in nature, but can get along with peaceful species that are not small enough to be considered prey. Ideal tank mates for this species include Characins, Dwarf Cichlids and Anabantids. Overcrowding and/or poor water conditions will cause a rapid decline in the health of Daget’s Panchax, so regular partial water changes are a must as well as efficient filtration.

Feeding

When it comes to diet, Daget’s Panchax are generally not difficult to feed. They will eagerly accept small live foods and will learn to accept frozen and flake foods over time. For optimum health and coloration, feed a varied diet of live/frozen foods such as brine shrimp, Daphnia, and bloodworms along with a good quality flake.

Breeding

Breeding Daget’s Panchax is very easy and these fish are considered egg scatterers. The spawning tank should be kept at a pH around 6.5 and a temperature of 77 degrees Fahrenheit. The tank should be brightly lit and decorated with plenty of floating plants for cover and fine-leaved plants for spawning medium. After spawning has occurred, transfer the eggs to a small tank filled with 1 or 2 inches of water treated with Methylene blue. The eggs should hatch after 8 to 11 days and the tiny fry can be fed on infusoria.
