Crescent Betta

Also called the Peaceful Betta, the Crescent Betta is widely-distributed throughout Malaysia, Vietnam and Thailand as well as the islands of Sumatra and Singapore. They are much more peaceful than their long-finned cousins, the Siamese Fighting Fish. Crescent Bettas are named for the red crescent visible on the edge of the caudal fin and have a dark black or brown body. These fish remain relatively small and can be kept safely with other small, peaceful fishes.

Tank Set-Up

These fish prefer well-planted tanks that provide plenty of cover in the form of floating plants, clay pots and driftwood roots or branches. Crescent Bettas typically prefer soft, acidic water and thrive in tanks with low water movement and subdued lighting. A quality sponge filter would be ideal for providing efficient filtration without the unwanted water movement and floating plants will provide for subdued lighting as well as a sense of security.

Feeding

For optimum health and coloration, feed a varied diet consisting of live/frozen foods such as bloodworms, tubifex and a high quality flake/pellet designed especially for Bettas.

Breeding

Males of the species are more colorful than the females and, prior to spawning, the male will build a nest to collect and protect the eggs. During mating, the male and female engage in a sort of “embrace” following which the eggs and sperm are released at the same time. Once the spawning has ended, the male will fiercely guard the nest until the eggs hatch between 24 and 48 hours later.
