Clown Barb

Also called Everett’s Barb, the Clown Barb originates in the inland waters of Asia. These fish can be found in both slow and quickly flowing rivers as well as bodies of standing water on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra. They have orange or brown backs, white or yellow bellies and their sides are ornamented with several red or orange stripes. These fish also have four or more black spots on their flanks.

Tank Set-Up

Clown Barbs are peaceful fish that thrive best in groups with 8 to 10 of their own species. Keeping these fish in large groups helps to prevent them from becoming skittish and provides a better display of their natural behavior. In addition, males of the species are less likely to show aggression in a larger group. These fish are undemanding when it comes to water conditions but prefer water with a slightly acidic pH. Filtration over peat can help to accomplish this. Provide a tank habitat that’s heavily planted, with the addition of driftwood, for a sense of security and a natural look. Cover the bottom with a dark substrate to help bring out the colors of this beautiful fish. Because these fish are likely to nibble at soft-leaved plants, stick to fast-growing species of live plants.

Feeding

These fish are omnivores in the wild, generally feeding on a insects, worms and crustaceans in addition to plant matter. Clown Barbs are likely to accept any foods they are offered but should be fed a staple diet of high-quality flakes supplemented with plenty of live and frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms and Daphnia. These fish may also benefit from some Spirulina flakes or blanched vegetables in their diet. To ensure the best health and coloration of this species feed a varied diet on a regular basis.

Breeding

In the home aquarium, Clown Barbs are fairly easily bred in either groups or pairs. The breeding tank should be dimly lit and decorated with clumps of fine-leaved plants. The water in the tank should be maintained at a neutral pH and a temperature between 80 and 84 degrees Fahrenheit. Because these fish are egg layers and exhibit no parental care, the parents should be removed from the breeding tank after spawning because they are likely to eat their own eggs and fry. After spawning, the eggs typically hatch in 24 to 48 hours and the fry will become free swimming about 24 hours later.
