Celestial Pearl Danio

Having only been discovered in 2006, the Celestial Pearl Danio is a new addition to the aquarium hobby. This species originates from a very small area in the Salween basin of Myanmar, specifically the Nam Pawn and Nam Lang rivers. These fish have a striking metallic blue body covered with iridescent spots and orange bands on the fins. The males of the species are notably more colorful and also exhibit black bands on the fins. Females of this species will appear duller in coloration and will have pale red fins.

Tank Set-Up

These fish are a small, peaceful species best kept in well-planted community tanks. However, a general community setup with larger, and possibly more boisterous, species is not recommended due to the small size of this fish and the possibility of intimidation. The Celestial Pearl Danio should be housed with at least 15 to 20 of their own species and they may also get along with other Danios. This species prefers a tank decorated to simulate their natural habitat – the tank should be densely planted and should provide plenty of cover in the form of rocks and driftwood. In the home aquarium, these fish are relatively easy to care for because they are able to withstand a variety of water conditions. But don’t interpret this as a “green light” to ignore regular water changes. As with any aquarium kept species, regular water changes should be part of the normal tank maintenance schedule.

Feeding

Celestial Pearl Danios feed largely on small invertebrates and algae in the wild. As for feeding in the home aquarium, they will accept a variety of foods, but new arrivals to the tank may need to be offered only small live foods until they adapt to aquarium life. For optimum health and coloration, feed a varied diet consisting of live/frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, Daphnia and a high quality flake. Any flake foods fed should be reduced to small enough particles to allow for easy feeding since this species has a small mouth. Furthermore, the particles will usually need to sink before any feeding occurs since the Celestial Pearl Danio normally hangs out towards the lower regions of the tank.

Breeding

Celestial Pearl Danios are egg scatterers and thus require a breeding tank decorated with clumps of fine-leaved plants. After spawning, the adults should be removed from the tank because they will eat their own eggs and because the female will need a recovery period before she is able to spawn again. The eggs typically hatch after 72 hours and the fry usually become free swimming after 3 to 4 more days.
