Celebes Rainbowfish

Celebes Rainbowfish are native to the island of Sulawesi, Indonesia. This island was formerly known as Celebes, which is where these fish got their name. This species of Rainbowfish can be found in slow-flowing waters such as streams and estuaries. Though they do not require salt content in their tank water, these fish are capable of surviving in brackish conditions. Celebes Rainbowfish have translucent bodies with greenish undertones. These fish may also exhibit yellow and black markings on the fins and males of the species may develop thread-like fin extensions.

Tank Set-Up

These fish are relatively easy to maintain in the home aquarium as long as they are kept in a tank with excellent filtration and clean, medium hard water that is slightly alkaline. Celebes Rainbowfish are very sensitive to sudden changes in water conditions, so it is best to introduce them slowly or to design the tank around their needs. They are also sensitive to poor water conditions and therefore, weekly partial water changes are a must to help maintain pristine water quality. The preferred set-up for Celebes Rainbowfish are floating plants and dim lighting. This species is very peaceful in nature and, because it remains fairly small, it is a good choice for the general community tank.

Feeding

Feed a varied diet consisting of a quality flake food as well as live/frozen foods such as bloodworm, Daphnia, and brine shrimp. As with most fish species, a varied diet is best for optimum health and coloration.

Breeding

Breeding Celebes Rainbowfish is not considered difficult, though the fry can be tricky to raise. These Rainbowfish are egg scatterers and thus require a breeding tank outfitted with plenty of fine-leaved plants. A slight drop in temperature can help to encourage spawning and the spawning process may continue over a period of several weeks.
