Buenos Aires Tetra

One of the most popular choices among beginning aquarium hobbyists, the Buenos Aires Tetra is native to South America. These fish can be found throughout the Rio Parana basin in Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil as well as in the Rio Uruguay basin in Brazil. This species of Tetra tends to inhabit a variety of bodies of water including streams, lakes, ponds and small rivers. The Buenos Aires Tetra has a metallic body with red fins and a black marking on the dorsal fin.

Tank Set-Up

Because almost all available specimens of this species are commercially bred, Buenos Aires Tetras are hardy and undemanding when it comes to tank conditions. These fish are most likely to thrive, however, in biotype tank setups. This species prefers sand substrate, driftwood branches and some leaf litter to stain the water, mimicking their natural environment. Though these Tetras may do well in planted tanks, they have a tendency to eat soft-leaved plants. This species is generally peaceful, though somewhat robust, so they should not be kept with shy tankmates. Because they are a shoaling species, these Tetras are best kept with at least 6 of their own species.

Feeding

Buenos Aires Tetras are relatively easy to feed and will accept most prepared foods as well as live and/or frozen foods. Their diet should be supplemented with vegetable wafers or Spirulina pellets. A varied diet will ensure optimum health and coloration.

Breeding

Breeding Buenos Aires Tetras is very easy in the home aquarium. The breeding tank shoud be dimly lit and decorated with clumps of fine-leaved plants. The water in the breeding tank should be acidic and soft, kept at a pH between 6.0 and 7.0. After spawning has occurred, remove the parent fish because they will eat the eggs.
