Blue Danio

Also called Kerr’s Danio, the Blue Danio originates from the islands of Langkawi and Ko Yao Yai in the Malaysian Peninsular of Southeastern Asia. Though not as popular as other Danios, the Blue Danio makes an attractive addition to the community tank. These fish are deep-bodied, exhibiting a blue coloration and several pinkish gold stripes spanning the length of their bodies.

Tank Set-Up

Though they are very tolerant of a variety of tankmates and water conditions, Blue Danios are best kept in planted tanks having a neutral to slightly acidic pH. These fish should be kept in groups having no fewer than six members – larger shoals will result in increased activity and more prominent coloration. In the home aquarium, these fish enjoy the addition of driftwood roots and branches and may appreciate gravel substrate as well. Blue Danios are easy to keep and a joy to watch as they zip around the tank.

Feeding

In the wild, Blue Danios feed primarily on insects and insect larvae along with algae and various forms of detritus. In the home aquarium, however, these fish are likely to accept any food offered. Give your Danios a staple diet of high-quality flakes supplemented with live and frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp and Artemia. To ensure the best health and coloration of this species feed a varied diet on a regular basis.

Breeding

This species is very easy to breed and may spawn in the community tank. Blue Danios are egg scatterers and thus prefer a breeding tank decorated with clups of fine-leaved plants. The water in the tank should be kept at a neutral or slightly acidic pH and maintained at a temperature around 75 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Because adults of this species will eat their own eggs and fry, they should be removed from the breeding tank following spawning. The eggs usually hatch after 24 to 36 hours.
