Big-Spot Rasbora

More commonly known as the Clown Rasbora, the Big-Spot Rasbora is native to the Malaysian Peninsula and the Greater Sunda Islands of Borneo and Sumatra. These fish vary in coloration depending on their native habitat, but most specimens exhibit two large black splotches on the flanks. This species grows somewhat larger than other rasboras, reaching an average length at maturity between three and four inches.

Tank Set-Up

Big-Spot Rasboras are peaceful fish but can be difficult to keep in the home aquarium because they are very picky when it comes to water quality. These fish are also very prone to disease, so they should be kept in quarantine for at least two weeks before being added to the show tank. Big-Spot Rasboras prefer soft, acidic water in densely-planted tanks. Because they are a schooling species, these fish should be kept with eight to ten of their own species.

Feeding

This species is insectivorious in nature, feeding on both aquatic and terrestrial insects. In captivity, however, Big-Spot Rasboras are easily-fed. Offer these fish a staple diet of live and frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms and Daphnia, supplemented with high-quality flakes or granules. Feed a diet consisting of a variety of foods on a regular basis to promote the best health and coloration.

Breeding

These fish are egg scatterers and continuous spawners which means that they spawn often. To encourage spawning behavior, add small amounts of cool water to the tank every few hours and condition the fish on live and frozen foods. Big-Spot Rasboras show no parental care and are likely to eat their own eggs and fry, so it is best to remove them from the breeding tank after spawning. The eggs usually take 18 to 48 hours to hatch and may become free swimming as soon as 24 to 48 hours later.
